BMW Z3 - Mettalic Sound behind seat

First sorry to write this in English but the matter has become a riddle and difficult for garages to solve. So hence my attempt to yo see if any of you have an idea

I have a wonderful Z3 which drives wonderfully. But has a strange sound behind the driver seat. A sound which is not wind not clicking, but a sound which sounds like a metal piece being touched. Its gets stronger when you drive harder. And the metallic sound is rather high pitched.

I got my breaks cleaned and checked if it was the wheel bearings (wiellager). Also made a test to see if it was the differential or anything specific. The garage confirmed it wasnt the bearings or the breaks. Also not an differential problem. The only thing they could come with was the hand break system on wheel-system but they were not sure.

It was a sound which clearly came from behind the driver. The people from the garage also took a drive and confirmed the sound.

Anyone had this similar problem? Getting to a point where its beginning to irritate me and you can almost not listen to it anymore.

All ideas are welcome..

cheers

Eric

PS All answers can be easily written in Dutch...

If it is the hand break system, you could try to drive with the hand break slightly up..

I had this problem before..

Also.. could it be the rear shock mounts? they also tend to rattle after a while..

I hope you will find it soon, because i can understand that it irritates you much.

Good luck

Lefthand drive or righthand drive? I presume lefthand. I've got the same problem but it sounds like it comes from behind the passenger seat. (lefthand drive that is)

thx...

Its not the rear shock system since i have already taken care of it. Its a metallic sound, which gets stronger when driving...

left hand drive hence behind the drivers seat. FYI its not the shock absorbers either...its kinda strange

furthermore, I did a small test by driving very slowly and use the handbrakes...the sound is not the same, so i believe its not the handbrakes

Maybe a worn rubber bushing of some sort?

Maybe a faulty drive shaft/propshaft/hardy disc?

First of all I have to admit that the word hardy disk is new to me..but remembering the check at the garage...that disk if damaged would make the car shake which it doesn't. AM I correct?

The shafts were checked and the sound is not typical for shafts. The reason I thought it would be the breaks was that the break disk had some metal contact (which can take place). The sound is indeed something similar. It really is located around the wheel and not any shafts. That we know for sure. We did raise the car and turned the engine on. Had the wheels turning and the sound could barely be heard near the wheel. Its only when the car has full weight and driving on the road you hear it.

"Oops, looks like we can't find that page!"

Thats the only sound here :scratchchin:

seriously...you couldnt hear anything..pff..I give up..:-(

Hehe GuidoK ment that the page you refer to is offline/it doesn't excist.

If you can post the correct link to soundcloud we can listen to it.

I don't hear anything strange at 16 sec..

I even can't hear a distinct car/driving sound

Geplaatst:

yeah..i can imagine that, since its difficult to make a good recording ,its clear when you are in the car though.

One guy did mention the gas pump..anyway...i need to go to a garage who have the knowledge or willing to listen to the sound...

Geplaatst:

is practically the sound..then I have two questions if its the fuel pump:

1. would the sound get stronger once driving harder..?

2. and is the fuel pump behind the driver seat?

Geplaatst:
1. would the sound get stronger once driving harder..?

I dont think so. What I understand of the z3 electrics is that the fuel pump is controlled by a relais, so it's an on/off function, not speed regulated.

Geplaatst:

Clearly not the sound that I hear in my Z3. Glad that I can rule this out. I will open a new topic for my specific problem. Good luck!

Geplaatst:

well its clearly not the:

  • The fuel pomp (the sound is continuous and the sound wouldn't go stronger while driving harder) and fuel pomp I believe is on the right side back (when facing forward)
  • The breaks since they got cleaned. Was tested turning the wheel and sound didn't come from breaks...or was very weak.
  • Handbrake. The BMW handbrake is different to other cars. As you know its a specific cylinder behind the breaks. I did some tests. The handbreak is in good state and the sound it produces when driving 10km and pulled, is not the same sound I have heard.

According to the garage:

  • the differential is in a good state.
  • its not the wheel bearings
  • not the tires

I am running out of options.

These are the facts:

The sound increases when driving above 30km/h and upwards

Its a almost whining /metallic contact sound like

Its behind the driver seat

And I am not crazy..:-) The guy at the garage heard it as well. Actually two garages.

Now my question is now

Are there anyone in the neighborhood who is a BMW z3 fan and have some mechanic experience. Simply to create a diagnose.???
